This marshalling signal question keeps coming up on the Austro Control exam. The trick is remembering wands pointing UP = identify gate, not stop. I printed out the SERA appendix and it helped a lot.
Tip: the visual annex makes this much easier. Once you see the actual diagram of each signal side by side, you won't mix them up again. The Captain explanation here is really clear.
